1 Kings 18:1And it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.”

Sometimes Gods gives us instructions that don’t make sense to us. He will ask us to do something then sit back and watch to see what we will do. There are people who move in obedience no matter what because they trust God to provide the next step and they know God does not make empty promises. They understand for the next step to be revealed, they have to move on what has already been given. Unfortunately, there are some who either get stuck waiting for more to be revealed before they obey or chose not to obey and go as far as questioning if it was God who really spoke.

I love how God will sometimes stretch us to accommodate His mandate. At the time when Elijah was told to go present himself to Ahab, Jezebel was killing the Lords prophets and Ahab’s servant Obadiah had hidden 100 prophets.. (1 Kings 18:4 While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water). You see for God to send the rain, Elijah had to obey the very simple yet dangerous instruction given to him. Was he afraid that Jezebel might have him persecuted like she had the other prophets? The bible doesn’t say but we know he obeyed. Gods promise was conditional. Today, God may ask you to do something before He moves in your situation, it may not even have something to do with your breakthrough. What He’s looking for is obedience.

Will you obey even though you may not understand? What has God told you to do? Have you seen breakthrough? If not, could it be because you haven’t done what He asked of you? Some people have this misconception that God will not ask us to do something or give beyond our means. Well, He asked Abraham to sacrifice His son Isaac and Abraham without missing a beat followed the instructions (Genesis 22: 1-19). It took an Angel of God interrupting Him from going through with the sacrifice. What about Hosea? He was told to marry a prostitute and he obeyed (Hosea 1:2-3). A few years ago, the Lord told me to leave my then position; I didn’t have another job to move to then but He’d promised to take care of me and He did. It was hard for me as I have a child but He never wavered on His promise and even though I had moments where I wanted Him to get me out of the situation, I persevered and He came through. The appointed time yielded three blessings for me and my daughter.

What can we glean from this?

  1. God might give you unusual instructions. Don’t try to make sense of things; it only leads to unbelief or disobedience.
  2. Obedience is Key. Be careful to obey even when you don’t understand.
  3. Faith will see you through when there is no “cloud” in the horizon.
  4. Perseverance is important for your faith to survive the wilderness.
  5. Remember, if God speaks, He will do it. He doesn’t make empty promises.

God believes in us more than we believe in ourselves and that is why He will stretch us beyond our limits because He knows He is able to accommodate what He asks of us. Elijah in vs41-45 prayed until it rained. He sent his servant seven times and he brought back the same answer. No cloud, no rain. The eighth time, his servant saw a small cloud and then it grew dark and the rain fell. Can you commit to praying like Elijah did? Are you willing to obey that instruction that stretches you beyond your limit trusting the same God who asks of you to see you through and deliver His promise?
