Florida is getting ready for Hurricane Matthew and as you can imagine people are busy shopping for supplies. I went to one store to get water and bread and was amazed there was no parking, the store was super packed, and water was almost out and the bread was gone. As I stood on the checkout line, I started thinking about spiritual and regular storms like sickness or losing a loved one and how to prepare for them.
As a believer, having a steady and consistent prayer and devotional life is very important. Just like a plant cannot do without water, soil and light, a born again believer cannot do without the essentials. You have to read the word. You have to pray. You cannot grow as a believer without the word and prayer. You cannot face the enemy without ammunition and the sword of the spirit is the best ammunition in taking out your spiritual enemies. The bible says in Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
On the hand, facing life altering storms can be challenging. What do you do when a loved one dies suddenly or they are diagnosed with a life threatening disease? How do you face that? Does it mean you were not well prepared? Absolutely not! Life has curve balls that we don’t normally see and sometimes when the curve ball hits, it hurts and bad news has a way of draining our joy. Struggles of life can test our faith and if we are not careful to stand on the word, the enemy who comes to kill, steal and destroy will bring confusion, lies and when you into it, it grows. The devil is the father of lies and that is why we need to stay in the word on a daily basis. He is a copycat; know the voice of the Father: read the word so when the time of testing comes you are able to stand.
Don’t go into the battle field with a defeated mind set no matter how bad your situation is. Read the word and stand on Gods promises. Put on the full amour of God and face your storms. Ephesians 6:10-14. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place
I remember going through something that really rocked my faith and the enemy started telling me to turn my back on God since He wouldn’t deliver me. During that storm, I wasn’t praying as I should have because I was worn out and felt depressed. I didn’t think God was listening and didn’t understand why He had not delivered me. I remember one time after the enemy had told me to turn my back on God, I said loudly, ‘God, even this will be my end, I will not forsake You.’ Right at that moment, the enemy lost ground, his slimy hold that he had started latching on to me couldn’t hold me back from loving God despite how bad things were. Then the Lord whispered in my ear and said, ‘Read about Job.’ It wasn’t what I wanted to hear but I read it. Job hang in there when the going got tough. Unlike Job, I still had my physical health, though my emotional health had taken a beating in the storm but my love for God had endured every attack and within a few weeks I had a breakthrough that left me speechless. Each day after God had told me to reach about Job I would go back and read it again. I would pray right after and wait on the Lord.
If you are at that point of giving up, don’t. If you are wondering why you haven’t seen any breakthrough keep asking and thank God for past victories. Face your storms like a warrior because the amour of God is yours. Use it. Stand your ground and walk through the storm with the sword of the spirit.
